Christmas Markets in Germany & France: A Regional Guide
Not every magical Christmas market makes the “best of Europe” lists, and honestly, that’s part of what makes them magical.
I’ve been chasing Christmas markets across western Germany and Alsace for four years now, hitting as many as I can manage each season, and I have no plans to slow down. What keeps bringing me back isn’t the famous ones with the longest lines, it’s the mid-sized and smaller markets where the real European Christmas charm lives. Invariably, a local craftsperson will stop me in my tracks with something completely unexpected, or a regional dish I’ve never heard of becomes an instant obsession.
Every market finds a way to surprise me. And every market is also a chance to see a beloved city dressed up at its most festive and welcoming best.
This is my ever-growing guide to the Christmas markets I’ve actually visited, rooted in western Germany and Alsace, expanding outward one season at a time.
