Metz Christmas Market 2025: One of Europe’s Best Hidden Gems!

Ready for an unforgettable side quest on your German Christmas market adventure? The Metz Christmas market, just over the border in France, rivals any other market I’ve been to – in Germany, France, and beyond!

I’m a huge fan of European Christmas markets where you don’t feel like you’re in a mosh pit, and where the first language you hear is the language of the country you’re actually in. My favorite market experiences of all are mid-sized, authentic, brimming with personality, delicious local food, handmade crafts, interesting market stalls, and something absolutely unique and memorable about the place – beyond the market itself.

This is why the easily-accessible city of Metz (pronounced Mess), located about half-way between Frankfurt and Paris, near the German border in the Grand Est Region of France, deserves a place high on your dream Christmas Market tour!

And if you decide to make it more than a day trip (trust me, you might), I’ve rounded up my favorite hotels steps from the cathedral so you can fall asleep to the glow of the market lights.

🏨 See my top Metz hotel picks

In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to plan your visit: opening dates, where to find fresh oysters, the can’t-miss “Le Chalet de Noël,” the rides and photo ops worth seeking out,

⚠️ Spoiler: once you see Metz lit up at night, you might just wish you’d booked more than a day trip.

Dates of the Metz Christmas market

Wednesday, November 24 – Tuesday, December 30th, 2025

Location of the Metz Christmas market

There are over 120 market stalls stretched focused mainly on Place de la République, Place Saint-Jacques and Place Saint-Louis. When in doubt, head to the cathedral and follow the magic!

Atmosphere

The ambiance in the Metz Christmas market is hard to describe… it’s luxurious, it’s warm, it’s indulgent and beautiful, it’s joyous and welcoming, and very very french.

One of my favorite things when I first began exploring French markets is just to compare the similarities and the differences between French and German markets. It’s well worth it to pop over from a German Christmas market tour so you can enjoy the best of both countries and their beautiful traditions, and have fun making your own comparisons.

Best Food at the Metz Christmas Market

The food and drink is one of the things that makes the Metz Christmas market so delightful and among the best in Europe. If you’re looking for a break from bratwurst and brezels, you’ll be amazed at all France has to offer!

You’ll find flaming Nordic salmon and other smoked fish, tartiflette that melts in your mouth, and even fresh oysters in the Place de Republique! And the pastries and sweet treats are absolutely next level.

There are also a couple interesting little spots set up with bar service where you can go inside and sit for a little break.

And there were definitely a few surprises! French quesadillas anyone?

And the drinks? Magnifique! Don’t call it glühwein here, it’s “vin chaud!” And you’ll find a variety of drinks to enjoy on site, or liqueurs to take home that involve the beloved local mirabelle plum.

Shopping at the Metz Christmas Market

There was really a nice variety of wares for sale at the Metz Marché de Noël! We noticed many more handcrafted items than in most markets, including lots of hand-knit winter wear, leather goods, Christmas decorative crafts, amazing french soaps, and more.

But the best part was a whole indoor market dedicated to local goods from around the Mosel region. Cheeses, meats, candles, crafts, jams and jellies, honey, liqueurs… it was a treasure trove so be sure to check out “Qualité Moselle – Le Chalet de Noël” specifically. You’ll find it in Place Saint-Jacques

There is also a year-round covered market right next to the cathedral that we visit every time we’re in Metz to load up on incredible cheese, pastries, meats, and fresh fish. This place is a foodie paradise so if you’ve got a streak of the gourmet in you, be sure to give yourself a little time there.

Entertainment and the Lantern Walk

There are all kinds of fun extras to keep everyone entertained at the market too!

There are rides, but low key ones meant for smaller kids. There’s a really cute one where you can sit in a giant Christmas ornament and revolve around a big lighted tree.

And of course, there’s a ferris wheel in the Place d’Armes for great views, and a saucer that kind of reminded me of the Space Needle in Seattle that will lift you off the ground for the highest view of the beautiful surroundings. Seeing the market from above is a treat.

And there’s also a beautiful luminary walk “Sentier des Lanternes,” where you stroll between rows of illuminated figures of toys, animals, Christmas decorations, and holiday themed items. Great photo ops!

Why the Metz Christmas Market?

Most people have never even heard of Metz, but this hidden gem just got voted 3rd “Best Christmas Market in Europe and winner of the “Best Christmas Market for Families” category in 2024! So, I’m not the only one who has been swept away by the Metz Christmas magique!

✅ Perfect size

Not too crowded and overwhelming, not too small that you’re done in an hour. Metz was the perfect place for a day trip from Kaiserslautern, which allowed time to see the market, eat a ton of food, and tour the cathedral. But honestly, I would have loved to have spent the night and done it again!

🇩🇪 Less touristy

I really felt like part of the local Christmas market scene. I’m sure there were some tourists there, but I didn’t notice outright. The locals were kind and friendly and happy to use their English. The whole experience felt very french in the best possible way.

Tip: This is a great day trip from Paris if you are looking to escape the crushing crowds of the Paris markets and experience some peace on earth. You won’t find the noise, and the flashing lights, and crazy rides here. Just happy tidings, and real Christmas spirit.

🎄Open After Christmas!

The Metz Christmas market is open until December 30! Sometimes the best way to relax and enjoy a Christmas market (especially if you’re the one doing all the Christmas prep) is going after the 25th! There aren’t many markets open late in the season, but Metz is one of them, allowing you some flexibility with planning.

🛍 Great shopping

There’s so much emphasis on local everything – from food to crafts! And really this is one of the things that makes Metz and any Christmas market with a local focus so very worth visiting. It just makes everything feel genuine, warm, and festive without being overtly commercialized.

🍴Awesome food and drink

Give me some raclette (incredible melted gooey bubbly cheese on fresh bread), and a glass of warm spiced french wine, and I’m happy! So was my husband who availed himself of a giant cookie that looked like it fell out of a pastry shop in the clouds. Let’s face it, if there’s one thing France knows, it’s food! So come with an empty belly and expect to fill it!

⛪️ Historical backdrop

I’m a sucker for a historic cathedral, but when it’s the backdrop for a stunning Christmas market, and it has more stained glass than any cathedral in the world, I’m in love. There are incredible historic sites all over Metz, but ducking in to this glowing kaleidoscope of beauty during the late afternoon sun, soaking in the color, and just sitting for a moment really brought out my inner “peace on Earth” like nothing else.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Great for kids

I didn’t have little ones with me, but the ones who were there were having an absolute blast! They had cute little rides for small kids (like a teacup ride) and lots of delicious treats. The photo opps were everywhere, and the market was not so crowded that you’d worry about losing somebody in the mayhem.

There’s also an illuminated lantern walk with large glowing figures of people, animals, and Christmas decorations that’s absolutely enchanting and sweet for photos.

👀 Lots of Other Things to See and Do

It’s not just at Christmas time that Metz shines! The city itself is absolutely beautiful and fascinating, with loads of history – ancient and modern. If you want to learn about the famous Graoully dragon, the World War II battle, the stunning German bridge, the Templar’s chapel, and much more, read our post 12 Incredible Things to See in Metz, France!

Christmas Market pro-tips

🌞🌛Timing

I always recommend trying to spend part of your visit in the daytime and part at night, and this is especially true for Metz. Daytime is for fewer crowds, checking out the market stalls, soaking in the history and enjoying the architecture, and grabbing lunch. It’s also a little warmer.

And in Metz, especially when the sun is lower in the sky, it’s the time to visit the incredible cathedral and see the stained glass light up!

As day turns to night, a winter chill sets in, the twinkling lights come on, and the whole market transforms into a sumptuous and glittering winter wonderland. Mittens and vin chaud (hot wine) add to the festivity.

💶 Cash

Definitely bring cash, since most booths cannot accept credit cards. If you are coming from outside the “Euro-zone” understand the exchange rate so you’ll know what you’re spending and how much to bring. Just Google “[your currency] to Euro conversion,” and you’ll see the current exchange rate. You’ll find most things at the market reasonably priced and made with quality.

🧤What to wear

Layers layers layers! Hats, mittens or gloves, a warm coat, and a scarf will serve you well, especially in the evening.

Also, central Europe can be very rainy so bring a collapsible umbrella that will fit in your tote bag or coat pocket if the weather looks rainy. If you do forget something, it will be a good excuse to pick up a fabulous hand-knit accesory from one of the stalls!

Also, smartwool socks, and comfortable warm shoes or walking boots are a must! If you’re wearing sneakers, make sure they aren’t the ventilated kind. Nothing kills the mood like cold wet feet!

Check out this link for the Metz 10-day weather forecast. Know what to expect before you plan your time at the market and be prepared.

If you do need to warm up, the cathedral is a great spot to duck inside!

🐾 Dog-friendliness

The Metz Christmas market like most places in France is dog friendly! That said, if your little guy or gal is reactive or gets overwhelmed, it’s best to leave them home or at the hotel while you enjoy the market stress-free.
