Where to Stay in Heidelberg: Best Hotels for Every Budget

I live close enough to Heidelberg that I don’t usually book a hotel here myself, but that actually makes me a pretty good resource for this. I’m constantly being asked where to stay in Heidelberg, and I’m also always scouting the best places, whether we’re traveling ourselves or friends and family are coming to visit. Over time I’ve built up a solid shortlist based on the same criteria I look for whenever we travel: great reviews, clean beautiful rooms, pet-friendly options, an easy walk into the Old Town where all the best sights are, and parking that doesn’t turn into a headache.

This guide covers where to stay in Heidelberg, from the best area to base yourself to hotel picks across every budget, from smart and affordable all the way up to full luxury.

The Best Area to Stay in Heidelberg

Your best home base is right in and around the Old Town, near the Marktplatz. This puts you within walking distance of the castle funicular, the Church of the Holy Spirit, the Old Bridge, and the main shopping street, so you’re not relying on your car or public transit to get around at all, once you’ve checked in. Every hotel below is either in the Old Town itself or just below the castle, close enough that walkability isn’t a concern.

FAQs

What’s the best area to stay in Heidelberg?

The Old Town, right around the Marktplatz, is the best base for most visitors. It puts you within walking distance of the castle funicular, the main sights, and the restaurants and shops along HauptstraรŸe, so you won’t need a car once you’ve arrived. And if you’re visiting Heidelberg during Christmas season, the markets will be right outside your door.

Are there pet-friendly hotels in Heidelberg?

Yes. Several of the hotels on this list, including Hotel zum Ritter and Hotel Europรคischer Hof, welcome dogs, so you don’t have to choose between a nice stay and bringing your pet along.

Is parking difficult in Heidelberg’s Old Town?

It can be tight if you’re not staying somewhere with dedicated parking. Hotel am Schloss and Hotel Panorama both offer on-site parking, which takes that stress out of the equation if you’re arriving by car.

Where to Stay in Heidelberg for First-Time Travelers

If you’re a first-time visitor, I’d point you toward Hotel zum Ritter for the sheer atmosphere of waking up right on the Marktplatz, and the history of the building facade itself. If you’re driving in or want castle views without the price tag of full luxury, Hotel am Schloss is the smarter pick. Either way, staying in or near the Old Town is what makes a Heidelberg visit feel easy rather than like a logistics project.
