We made plans to visit Rothenburg’s Christmas market on fairly short notice, which meant every hotel inside the Old Town was booked solid by the time we looked. We had a car, and there seemed to be plenty of parking just outside the city gates, so we decided to stay a bit further out instead of skipping the trip entirely.
That’s how we ended up at Old West Ranch, about 20 minutes away in the tiny village of Windelsbach. The photos looked like a Hollywood movie set, and I booked it on the spot – half out of curiosity, and half for the sheer novelty of it. It did not disappoint. Our room was a small wooden cabin with a kitchenette and a genuinely comfortable bed, and outside our door sat a row of buildings with swinging saloon doors and wooden walkways straight out of Tombstone, Arizona. We may have been the only guests there when we arrived.
The owners were wonderful, and the whole experience was somehow both absurd and perfect: a full day inside a walled medieval German town, followed by a 20 minute drive that dropped us into the wild west, complete with horses, mountains, and a split rail fence. The property also says “vacation with your horse also possible,” and yes, that’s accurate, you can really bring your own horse if you have one! That was a first for us.
Parking is free and on-site, dogs are welcome, and rooms start around $70 a night. So, if Rothenburg is booked solid, or if you just want a great story to tell, this is a fantastic option.

Romantik Hotel Markusturm (My Research Led Me Here): Best Historic Stay With Parking
We walked past this place and my jaw dropped. The location is unbelievable, right next to one of Rothenburg’s majestic stone towers. The tower itself is one of 42 that make up Rothenburg’s medieval fortifications, part of a roughly four-kilometer wall you can still walk today.
The building dates to 1264, and is only about a two-minute walk from the Marktplatz. Valet parking sets it apart, so you just hand over your keys and staff handles the rest. Individually decorated rooms that are everything you’d imagine, wine soup and home-brewed beer on the menu, a flower-filled courtyard terrace, and dogs welcome for a small fee. This is likely where we’re going to book next time. It checks all our boxes and more.

This is a real 14th-century inn, dead center in the walled town, with genuine family-run warmth according to several reviews that mention chatting with the owner at the hotel’s own bar. Staying inside the medieval walls would have been our first choice. There are so many absolutely adorable guest houses and small hotels where you can step out your front door and be right in the middle of Germany’s best medieval town. If you don’t mind a short drive, staying just outside town works well too, especially during busy seasons.
Is It Hard to Find Parking in Rothenburg?
Parking is extremely limited inside the walls. A hotel with genuine on-site parking is worth prioritizing if you’re driving. But there is a lot of parking steps outside the walls, and we were able to park there several times throughout our trip with almost no trouble finding a spot.
Do I Need to Book Rothenburg Hotels Far in Advance?
Yes, especially Christmas market season and summer weekends. Rothenburg is only so big and there are no giant chain hotels that can accommodate throngs of tourists.
