Welcome Hotel Marburg Review: Discover Dog-friendly Charm

We recently spent three nights at the Welcome Hotel Marburg in Germany’s land of fairy tales with our french bulldog Helga! And right in keeping with the theme, our hotel was directly across the street from a secret elevator to medieval fairytale land! Ok, maybe it’s not a secret, but it sure felt like one. The public elevator takes you up the hill from the “Lower City” right to the “Upper City” – the heart of Marburg’s Old Town with its half-timbered buildings and fountains and a castle, and fairytale-themed sculptures, and the stomping grounds of the Brothers Grimm! What a trip!

Location of Welcome Hotel Marburg

Welcome Hotel Marburg

Welcome Hotel Marburg is located at Pilgrimstein 29. It’s the red pin on the map above. Cross Pilgrimstein, hop in the Oberstadt-Aufzug (Upper City Elevator) and keep going straight through a little tunnel and you’ll pop out right in the Old Town!

It’s the perfect location for being able to park your car easily on site, and also get to the Old Town in just a couple minute walk.

Checking in and parking

There is a car park right underneath the hotel which is accessed from behind the building. The daily rate is €16 which is not included in the hotel price. Sometimes parking can be a challenge when your destination is narrow cobblestone streets but the existence of the magic elevator made it all a breeze.

The Lobby

A hotel lobby with grey love seats and upholstered stools, with tables and a small gas fireplace with people sitting and walking

The reception desk is right at the door, and the staff were extra friendly, and speak English very well.

In the lobby you’ll find the elevator, several very nice seating areas, a flat screen TV, and a gas fireplace. The space was comfortable and beautiful, and there were always a few people just hanging out there passing time, or working on laptops, or chatting.

Just behind the sitting area is the restaurant/breakfast room.

Our Room at Welcome Hotel Marburg

The rooms are fairly basic, comfortable, and clean with a little modern flair. A dormer in our room, and a window that actually opens gave it a little European character.

There was a nice little desk to use as a workstation, a satellite flat-screen TV, a bench to lay your suitcase, a couple shelves, and a small fridge.

We got the double room which was cozy but big enough. There are also Junior and Executive suites that hold up to four people available if you want to stretch out a little more, or if you’re bringing kids.

Our window faced the rear of the building and looked out over rooftops and a nice wooded hillside. There was air conditioning in the room, but the temperatures were perfect so we opted to sleep with the window open and enjoy the fresh air.

The Bathroom

The bathroom was clean and big enough, but definitely not large. It’s a one-person-at-a-time layout. The shower was a little tight but it worked. There was also a hair dryer which I’d give four stars out of ten, and basic toiletries provided.

Breakfast at Welcome Hotel Marburg

The breakfast was excellent and is included in your room price. Two large buffet tables served up a large selection of goodies from typical European continental-style with meats, cheeses, fruit, lox, yogurt with toppings, and fresh breads and pastries; to American-style eggs (fresh!), bacon, and sausage.

It’s a beautiful dining room with tastefully upholstered chairs, cool lighting, wood and tile floors, and elegant tableware.

Tables come with a large carafe of black coffee, and there are espresso machines that give you a variety of espresso drinks with the push of a button.

Before checking out on our final day at Welcome Hotel Marburg, we really enjoyed just sitting over a leisurely coffee and croissant (ok maybe we went back a couple times for other things) and recapping our incredible weekend. We put in a lot of steps on a lot of hills and it was really nice to decompress and bask in the glow of all that fun.

The breakfast room doubles as a restaurant in the evening, serving up German and international cuisine. We didn’t try it though, as we were out and about and indulged in some of the great eateries in the Old Town.

Dog-friendliness

While there were no dog amenities provided in the room (like a bed or bowls or treats) we brought all those things, so it worked out okay. Helga really liked the room overall, and everything was nice and quiet on the upper floor so triggers were at a minimum.

We made sure to ask for a room that wasn’t near the elevator to keep the foot traffic down and the hotel obliged us, and everything was very peaceful.

There was a €20 per night pet fee which is fairly standard, but be sure to check with the hotel when you book for the most current fee.

The city of Marburg itself, like Germany as a whole, is very dog friendly. Dogs are always hanging out in cafés, often allowed inside in restaurants, accompanying their humans into bookstores and gift shops. Although museums are off limits, you’ll usually be able to walk on the grounds around castles, palaces, and attractions with your dog.

What is There to See Close to the Hotel?

One of the reason Welcome Hotel Marburg is so great is that it’s located close to everything! Marburg is very walkable and compact and everything from the castle atop the hill to the whole of the Old Town, to St. Elizabeth’s Church which is practically next door to the hotel, is within easy walking distance.

If you really want to squeeze all the historical juice out of your trip and make sure you don’t miss anything, a private walking tour of Marburg is the way to go. It will take a few hours and you’ll get all the backstory, the history, and hit all the important sites. Then if you want to revisit any of them, pop into one of the amazing little shops you passed, or go linger in some magical spot you saw, it’s easily doable.

Would We Stay at Welcome Hotel Marburg again?

Helga gives the dog-friendly Welcome Hotel Marburg 🦴🦴🦴🦴/5, and thoroughly enjoyed her stay. And so did we!

The fabulous location, great parking, superb breakfast, and clean, quiet room did it for us. In addition to welcoming dogs, those are our four main criteria for a successful stay at any hotel, and Welcome Hotel Marburg delivered.

We would happily stay again and recommend it as a great dog-friendly option when you’re staying in Marburg. It’s also a good idea to make reservations as soon as you can, especially during the summer months.

We hope you enjoy your stay!
